*There is mounting evidence that quantum processes are at work in the retina of many animals, playing a vital role in navigation and orientation.33, 34

Figure 20. Light energy encoded in the brain. The model of our visual perception presented here is simplified. For example, our optic tracks cross, allowing us to have binocular vision; and modern scans suggest that not all the optical processing occurs just at the visual cortex. Now comes the magic. Something, somehow, has to convert all these scattered bits of information into a picture of the world around us. And if, indeed, our holographic universe is really a blurred mess of interfering fields, the visual cortex is the site where much of our virtual reality is created. And the magic wand that makes all this possible? I suspect that if I were to say that the wand is our consciousness, it could provoke either derision, or a barrage of questions about exactly how, why, and possibly even who.

Before we consider some of the possible mechanisms behind the creation of our perception, some further clarification is needed around Pribram’s proposed model. He theorizes that each sense processes its information in the way I have just described, at specific locations around the brain, that is, the visual, auditory cortex—a process, it could be argued, that is not truly holographic. So in this regard, our brain is functioning as a standard electronic computer, receiving and encoding data, then relaying the data back in a usable form. He also theorizes, however, that each brain cell at these specific locations can have access to all the information of the whole, just as some suggest each photon of light reaching our eyes has access to the whole. So we are now describing the sophisticated workings of something yet to be created by the world’s most progressive IT companies: the quantum computer.

And considering our brain as a quantum computer is the necessary next step towards solving the riddle of just how our consciousness manifests itself. One prominent researcher from Florida State University, Professor Efstratios Manousakis, has forwarded the theory that quantum processes are at play when we are confronted by ambiguous images, such as the famous vase that can equally be perceived as being the profiles of two faces. The image exists in a state of probabilities, until, through the act of our perception, it collapses down into being either a vase or two faces.80 (See figure 21.)
